They’re crafted in western Sweden by Öjbro Vantfabrik, a small, independent manufacturer dedicated to preserving the heritage designs and patterns of Swedish woollen garments through beautiful pieces of ‘wearable art’. The Karg is inspired by the simple, rugged workwear used and abused by people living in the toughest and most remote provinces of Sweden.
One such province is Rörö, an island that lies far out in the northern part of the Gothenburg archipelago. Its name comes from the old Norse word “Rör”, meaning reed, and even today the island is known for its vast reedbeds, which attract nature lovers and birdwatchers. The island’s original inhabitants were hunters, fishermen and boat builders, who eked out a spartan existence in this harsh and barren climate.
